ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team suffered its first MIAC loss of the season Wednesday night at the hands of No. 21 St. Thomas. The Tommies beat CSB 3-0 on the UST campus in St. Paul.
St. Thomas (12-2, 2-0) won 25-18, 25-13 and 25-18. CSB is now 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.
In the first set UST took an early lead and never gave it up. CSB got within four at 13-9 thanks to a block by
Lauren Mathews and
Hunter Weiss, but that was as close as it came. Saint Benedict actually led 8-6 early in the second set, but the Tommies went on an 11-2 run to grab a 17-10 lead and never looked back.
In the third and final set, CSB used kills from
Briana Schmiesing,
Madison Weiss and Mathews to tie the game at 12-12, and the team got within two again at 16-14 thanks to a kill from
Hunter Weiss, but UST pulled away for the win.
Hunter Weiss led the team with 11 of the team's 33 kills and Schmiesing finished with eight.
Megan Pekarek had 28 assists and
Madison Weiss led the team with four block assists. Defensively,
Haley LaValle led CSB with 13 digs and
Bridget McDonald added 10.
Whitney Lloyd led all hitters with 12 kills for UST. Katharine Mallak had 20 assists and Ellie Meyer led the team with 18 digs.
CSB is back in action and at home for the first time this season Friday, Sept. 22, when it hosts Hamline at 7 p.m.
