TACOMA, Wash. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday evening when it beat Edgewood College in a five-set thrilled in the team's final match of the Puget Sound Invite in Tacoma, Wash.
CSB (1-3) won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-16, but Edgewood (0-4) came back to win the next two in close fashion, 25-23 and 25-10. Saint Benedict, however, responded with a 15-6 win in the fifth and final set.
Junior
Liz Schultz led the team with 14 kills, and she also finished the match with 16 digs and four service
Hunter Weiss finished with nine kills, and
Briana Schmiesing and
Megan Pekarek each added eight. Pekarek had 36 assists, and
Haley LaValle led the defense with 25 digs.
Bridget McDonald (13) and Pekarek (12) also had double-digit digs.
In the team's first match of the day, Saint Benedict fell 3-1 to Pacific Lutheran, marking the team's third 3-1 loss of the season. After dropping the first set 25-22, CSB came back to win the second set 25-19, but dropped the next two 25-13 and 25-20.
Schultz led the team with 14 kills against Pacific Lutheran and Schmiesing added 10. Pekarek had 31 assists and LaValle led the defense with 18 digs.
Madison Weiss had a team-high seven block assists.
CSB is off now until Friday, Sept. 8, when it travels to the Augsburg Invite for a nonconference matchup against the host-school Auggies.
