TACOMA, Wash. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team played right with its opponents, but dropped a pair of matches by 3-1 scores Friday on the first day of the Puget Sound Invite in Tacoma, Wash.
Saint Benedict (0-2) started the weekend against Clarkson, where it won a 27-25 first-set thriller before dropping the next three sets 25-21, 25-23 and 25-15. In its second match of the day, CSB fell 25-19 to host-school Puget Sound to start the match, but won the second set 25-18. The Loggers won the final two sets 25-21 and 25-23.

Hunter Weiss had a big match for CSB in its first game of the day, leading the team with 17 kills and a .412 attack percentage after committing just three errors. Twin sister
Madison Weiss added eight kills and
Briana Schmiesing finished with seven. Senior
Megan Pekarek had 38 assists and sophomore libero
Haley LaValley finished with a team-high 15 digs.
Liz Schultz (14) and Pekarek (13) also finished with double-digit digs.
Hunter Weiss had another big match in the second game with 12 kills.
Briana Schmiesing led the team with 14 kills and
Liz Schultz finished with 10. Pekarek added 44 assists to her total for the day along with 14 more digs. Schultz led the team with 19 digs and LaValle added 14.
CSB returns to action Saturday, Sept. 2, when it takes on Pacific Lutheran at 1 p.m. CDT and Edgewood College at 7 p.m. CDT in Tacoma.
