ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team fell 9-0 to Bethel Saturday morning in a match that was much closer than the score indicated.
Two of the six singles matches went to tiebreakers, and two more needed an extra point to decide the winner. Saint Benedict is now 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.
"Bethel played great doubles today and they were tough in singles as well," CSB head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We did a great job staying in the match and gave ourselves some opportunities to win matches, which is great to see. We can't get too down with matches like these because we are doing the right things and we will turn the score around in time."
The Royals (14-4, 3-3) swept doubles play, winning all three matches 8-2.
Tessa Rahrick took her match to a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, but she fell 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
Erin Kolbow fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and
Ellen Stensrud also took her match to a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles before falling 4-6, 6-1, 12-10.
Lauren Clark lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, and both
Gabbie Noack and
Ashley Kraemer's matches needed an extra point to be decided. Noack fell 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, and Kraemer lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Saint Benedict is back in action Sunday, April 9, when it travels to Northfield to take on Carleton. Due to forecasted rain, that match will be played starting at 2:30 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minn.
