Bats come alive for CSB again in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The bats came alive again Wednesday for the College of Saint Benedict softball team as it picked up two more wins Wednesday in Florida. Saint Benedict finished the day with three homers and three doubles as it beat Monmouth 8-2 and Immaculata 10-2 in five innings.

Saint Benedict is now 5-1 in Florida and 6-2 on the season. Head coach Rachael Click is two wins away from the 100-win milestone in her four-plus year career at CSB. She is 98-67 eight games into the 2017 season.

CSB was hot early against Monmouth as it scored three first-inning runs on an RBI groundout by Emilie Antony and a two-run homer by Karlee Pfaff. Monmouth scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game, but those are the only runs the Scots would score.

Saint Benedict added four runs in the fifth thanks to a three-run homer from Antony and a solo shot from Sara Wennerstrand, and Antony added an RBI single to her total in the seventh inning to end the scoring.

Antony finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs to lead CSB, which had nine total hits. Wennerstrand and Pfaff both had two hits and Pfaff also had two RBIs. Kiela DeVlaeminck threw all seven innings and earned the win after giving up two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

The first few innings of CSB's game against Immaculata were close, but Saint Benedict scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. CSB scored twice in the first on RBI singles from Wennerstrand and Pfaff, and added a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Pfaff to make it 3-1. Immaculata scored once in the fourth to make it 3-2, but CSB used five hits and three Immaculata errors to score seven runs in the fifth. Antony had a two-run double, Linsey Sanchez hit a two-run single and Pfaff, Wennerstrand and Emily Nelson all sent in a run.

Antony went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Pfaff was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Wennerstrand went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for CSB, which had 11 hits. Alex Smith threw all five innings and earned the win after giving up two runs on six hits.

CSB is off Thursday, but returns to action Friday, March 10, against SUNY Oneonta and Husson.
