CSB picks up 10th win of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its Florida trip with a split Sunday afternoon. CSB beat Western Connecticut State 6-3 before falling 11-3 to Salve Regina in six innings.

Saint Benedict heads back to St. Joseph with an 11-3 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the Sunshine State. That marks the team's best spring break record since 2014 when it went 9-2 with one game canceled due to rain. CSB started the season 13-2 that year.

In the first game of the day, CSB scored all the runs it would need in a five-run first inning. Kate Deming and Megan Toninato both reached on errors, and Deming came around to score on a wild throw. Toninato scored on a sac fly by Karlee Pfaff, and Kendra Swanson sent in CSB's third run. Hailey Monroe also had an RBI single and Deming was walked with the bases loaded for the fifth run of the inning.

Western Connecticut scored three runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run triple and an RBI single, but that's all the runs it could muster. CSB held WCSU off the board for the remaining six innings, and added an insurance run when Sara Wennerstrand hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh.

Wennerstrand had two of CSB's five hits. Alex Smith threw all seven innings to pick up her fourth win of the year. She gave up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Salve Regina scored first to start the second game and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a throwing error. Salve Regina scored four runs on five hits in the second to take a 5-2 lead it would never give up. CSB got on run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Deming, but Salve Regina scored twice in the fifth and three more times in the sixth to end the game early.

Claire Boatman had two hits for CSB, which finished with just five hits for the second straight game. Cassie Meyer took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in two innings. Jocelyn Metz gave up three runs on six hits in three innings of work, and Kadee Vesledahl gave up three runs in the final innings.

CSB flies back to Minnesota Monday, but doesn't hit the field again until March 25 when it takes on Simpson and Westminster (Mo.) in Pella, Iowa.
