BEMIDJI, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team started MIAC play with a win Sunday in the first of its two matches of the day in Bemidji, Minn. CSB defeated Concordia 9-0 before losing a nonconference nail biter 5-4 to Bemidji State to wrap up the weekend 2-1 overall.
CSB (4-3, 1-0) started the day with a sweep of Concordia to start its MIAC season.
Laura Finn and
Tessa Rahrick kicked off the day with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles,
Ellen Stensrud and
Erin Kolbow won a close match 8-6 at No. 2 doubles and
Kylie Miller and
Gabbie Noack completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Finn, Rahrick and Kolbow won at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to start singles play for CSB. Stensrud won at No. 4 singles,
Ashley Kraemer came in to hold on for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and first year
Lauren Clark won at No. 6 singles.
In its second match of the day, Saint Benedict dropped a close match, 5-4, to Bemidji State – a Division II team that competes in the NSIC. CSB started the nonconference match with a pair of doubles wins to go up 2-1 heading into singles play.
Finn and Rahrick picked up another win together at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, to put CSB up 1-0. Stensrud and Kolbow fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, but Noack and Clark teamed up to win 8-5 at No. 3 doubles to put CSB up.
Bemidji won at No. 1 singles, but Rahrick picked up her third singles win of the weekend at No. 2 singles to keep CSB ahead. Bemidji won at No. 3 singles, but Stensrud gave CSB its fourth win of the match, coming back to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 4 singles. Clark won the first set at No. 5 singles but lost 2-6, 6-1, 10-6, and Bemidji won No. 6 singles to take the match.
Saint Benedict returns to action Saturday, Feb. 11, when it plays at home for the first time this season. CSB hosts North Central (Minn.) at 12:30 p.m. at Sta-Fit, formerly Fitness Evolution, in Sartell.
