ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team picked up its first MIAC win of the season Saturday afternoon when it defeated St. Kate's 3-2 at the MAC in St. Cloud.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after one period, and Saint Benedict (4-15-2, 1-11-2) scored a pair of second-period goals and then held on for the win.
St. Kate's (7-12-2, 3-9-2) scored first when Allie Guzy scored on the power play for the Wildcats in the seventh minute of the first period to make it a 1-0 game.
Courtney Conlin tied the game six minutes later when she scored off an assist from
Brigette Miller in the 13
th minute.
The score stayed tied at 1-1 until the second when
Elli Marvin scored her 14
th goal of the season at the 6:59 mark to make it 2-1.
Maddie Rainey got credit for the assist. Saint Benedict took the lead for good with just over a minute and a half left in the second when
Shelby Schneider scored on the power play off assists from
Kylie Eklund and Marvin.
Saint Benedict held its two-goal lead until the final minutes of the third period. The Wildcats pulled their goals with around 3:30 left to play, and the Wildcats scored to get within one goal. The two teams were called for coincidental penalties with just over a minute and a half left to play to make it 5-on-4 as St. Kate's still had an empty net, but CSB blocked several shot attempts by the Wildcats to hold on for the win.
St. Kate's finished with 29 shots to Saint Benedict's 20, but sophomore goalie
Julia Carle made 27 saves to pick up her second win of the season. Marvin finished with six shots on net and Miller and Conlin each added three.
CSB is on the road twice next weekend as it travels to Winona, Minn., to take on Saint Mary's in a pair of MIAC games. Saint Benedict's final home game of the season is Saturday, Feb. 18, when it hosts league-leading Augsburg.
