NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team picked up its first point in the MIAC standings Saturday night when it picked up a 3-3 overtime tie with St. Olaf.
Saint Benedict (0-5-1, 0-3-1) was down 2-0 after one period, but scored three second-period goals to take a 3-2 lead over the Oles (2-3-2, 1-2-1) before St. Olaf tied the game in the third. Neither team was able to score in overtime, so CSB picked up its first tie of the season.
Jane Vezina scored all three goals for St. Olaf Saturday, and the first two came in the first seven minutes of the game. The Oles scored in the third minute then in the sixth minute on a power play to go up 2-0, and that score held the remainder of the first.
Less than two minutes into second period,
Mariah Reed scored the first goal of her career to make it a 2-1 game. She scored at the 1:33 mark off assist from
Kennedy Hageness and
Kaitlyn Miller. Saint Benedict tied the game in the 15
th minute when
Shelby Schneider scored her first goal of the season on the power play, and took a 3-2 lead with three seconds left in the period when
Maria Wallace scored the first goal of her CSB career.
Saint Benedict held onto its lead until late in the sixth minute of the third period when Vezina scored her third goal of the game on a 5-on-3 after a pair of CSB penalties were called. Both teams had several shots on net in the final minutes of the period, but neither were able to score. The Oles had four shots on net in overtime, but
Julia Carle stopped all four shots to hold onto the tie.
The Oles finished with 42 shots on net to Saint Benedict's 26. Carle finished the night with 39 saves, including double-digit saves in both the first and second periods.
CSB is off now until Dec. 1-2 when it hosts Saint Mary's for a pair of MIAC games at the MAC in St. Cloud.
