Hockey battles hard, falls to St. Olaf 2-1

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - If momentum was converted to goals in hockey, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team would have won 100-2, but alas, that is not how the rules work. Saint Benedict (0-5, 0-3 MIAC) fell by a slim 2-1 margin to the St. Olaf Oles (2-3-1, 1-2 MIAC) at Dave Torrey Arena.

Saint Benedict and the Oles seem to open the game by feeling each other out, with neither team making big plays. Most of the first period would flow this way, with the two teams trading off opportunities, and no real difference statistically, as St. Olaf held a slight margin after the first frame in shots on goal at 9-7.

The second period was a tale of two periods. Both teams came out firing, with each team testing the opposing goaltender multiple times in the first two and half minutes. The Oles would be the first team to break through however, as Kalli McCullen would clean up a rebound in front of junior goaltender Julia Carle and put her team up 1-0 3:47 into the period. That would be the only scoring to come in the second period, despite a huge opportunity by CSB that saw a Mollie Wise shot miss the goal by millimeters.

The third period carried over the momentum of the second, with CSB coming out shooting, and keeping the pressure on St. Olaf goaltender Sam Klemann. However, the Oles would again find the net as Sydney Gish scored her first goal of the season to give the Oles a 2-0 lead.

Less than two minutes later however, Saint Benedicts tenacity would pay off as Jessica Malloy would score her first collegiate goal from an assist from Shelby Schneider to cut the lead to 2-1. Despite going on the power play with just 2:19 remaining in the game, and eventually pulling Carle to play six on four, CSB would not be able to tie this one up, and the Oles earned their first conference win of the season.

CSB was able to overcome a major hurdle that they had struggled with through the beginning of the season: staying out of the box. CSB had no penalties in the game, while St. Olaf sent a player to the box twice. Saint Benedict also found success in the faceoff circle, edging out St. Olaf 29-20.

CSB returns to action Nov. 18 when they travel to St. Peter to face the Oles on their home ice. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
