ST. CLOUD, Minn. – There weren't all that many penalties called in Friday night's hockey game between the College of Saint Benedict and St. Thomas – five total – but the Tommies took advantage of each power play opportunity they were given.
St. Thomas went 3-for-3 on the power play to beat CSB 3-2 Friday at the MAC in St. Cloud. Saint Benedict (3-14-1, 0-10-1) tied the game twice, but a CSB penalty late in the third gave UST all the room it would need.
The Tommies (6-8-3, 5-3-3) started the scoring with 18 seconds left in the first period to go up 1-0 after CSB was called for a hooking penalty.
Maddie Rainey tied the game with her second goal of the game in an otherwise-quiet second period. Her goal, which came off assists from
Elli Marvin and
Erica Borrell, came in the 16
th minute.
After one goal and no penalties in the second period, however, there were three goals scored and three penalties called in the third and final period.
St. Thomas regained the lead on another power play goal late in the eighth minute of the third, but Saint Benedict had an answer once again as
Kennedy Hageness scored her first goal of the season in the 11
th minute to make it 2-2. Borrell and Rainey notched assists on Hageness' goal.
The Tommies, however, used one final power play opportunity to score all the goals it would need. CSB was called for slashing at the 12:38 mark, and just 17 seconds into the power play, Leah Schwartzman scored the game-winner for UST.
CSB pulled goalie
Julia Carle with one minute left in the game, but couldn't tie the game to send it to overtime.
St. Thomas outshot Saint Benedict 36-19.
Brigette Miller had five shots on net for CSB and Marvin and Rainey both had three. Carle made 33 saves for CSB.
CSB and the Tommies are back in action Saturday, Jan. 28, when they play at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
