Carle records career-high 54 saves in OT loss at UST

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team got off to a fast start and sophomore goalie Julia Carle had a career game Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as CSB fell 4-3 in overtime to St. Thomas in a MIAC game in Mendota Heights, Minn.

CSB (3-15-1, 0-11-1) scored three goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead and snag all the momentum early against the Tommies, but UST (7-8-3, 6-3-3) chipped away at Saint Benedict's lead. UST, which scored three power play goals Friday, added two more Saturday – on in the second and one in the third – and added a second third-period goal to tie the game and send it into OT.

Carle made five saves in overtime and CSB looked like it had secured its second tie of the year, but with 19 seconds left to play, Emily Michaelson scored her first goal of the season to give UST the go-ahead for the win.

Brigette Miller started the scoring in the seventh minute of the first period for CSB when she scored off assists from Courtney Conlin and Allison Kirk. She scored again – her eighth goal of the season – to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute off an assist from Kylie Eklund, and Elli Marvin made it 3-0 with just over there minute left in the first, also on an assist from Eklund. The goal marked the 13th of the year for Marvin.

CSB's 3-0 lead held until the eighth minute of the second period when the Tommies scored on a power play. Saint Benedict held a two-goal lead throughout the remainder of the second, but UST made it a one-goal game 19 seconds into the final period, and tied the game three minutes later to send it into overtime.

Carle made a career-high 54 saves to keep CSB in the game. She had 13 first-period saves, and made 25 second-period saves to allow Saint Benedict to maintain a two-goal lead. Saint Benedict had 21 shots on net and were led by Miller, who had eight total shots on goal.

CSB is back in action Friday and Saturday Feb. 3-4 when it takes on St. Kate's. Friday's game is in St. Paul, and Saturday the two teams play at the MAC in St. Cloud at 3 p.m.
