ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team picked up its first point in MIAC play Saturday afternoon when it played Bethel to a 2-2 overtime tie at the MAC in St. Cloud.
CSB, which is now 3-13-1 overall and 0-9-1 in the league, looked poised to pick up its first conference win of the year as it led the Royals (7-7-3, 4-3-3) 2-1 with a minute left in regulation, but the Royals took advantage of a late power play to tie the game with 49 seconds left to play and send the game into overtime.
The Royals had three shots on net in the five-minute overtime, but sophomore goalie
Julia Carle stopped all three to preserve the tie and snap CSB's six-game losing streak.
Saint Benedict got on the board first Saturday when
Maddie Dockry scored at 13:06 off assists from
Maddie Rainey and
Elli Marvin. The Royals tied the game in the 15
th minute, and the score stayed tied until the final seconds of the second period when Marvin notched her 12
th goal of the season. She got the puck on a breakaway and put a move on Bethel's goalie to put CSB up 2-1 with three seconds remaining in the period, and CSB held that lead until the final minute of the game.
Bethel outshot Saint Benedict 50-26, but Carle made 48 saves to keep CSB in the game. That is just two saves shy of her career-high of 50 saves, which she made earlier this season against Gustavus. Rainey,
Brigette Miller and Marvin all finished with four shots on net for CSB.
Saint Benedict is back at home Friday, Jan. 27, when it hosts St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m.
