ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After taking a 2-0 lead early in the first period Thursday night against St. Olaf, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team gave up three shorthanded goals and eventually lost 4-3 in overtime to the Oles at the MAC in St. Cloud.
Saint Benedict (3-10, 0-6) got on the board 52 seconds into the game when
Brigette Miller scored her sixth goal of the season. The goal, which was CSB's first shot of the game, came off assists from
Maddie Rainey and
Elli Marvin.
CSB took a two-goal lead in the 14
th minute of the game on the power play when
Mollie Wise scored off assists from Rainey and Miller. That lead held the remainder of the first period and seven minutes into the second, but then the Oles got on the board.
St. Olaf (3-9, 2-5) took advantage of three CSB penalties to score three straight power play goals and take a 3-2 lead. The first two goals came within 40 seconds of each other at the 7:13 mark and again at the 7:55 mark, and the Oles made it 3-2 late in the 16
th minute.
Kylie Eklund tied the game with just over a minute left in the second period, scoring her first goal of the season unassisted from straight in front of the net to tie the game at 3-3.
The game stayed tied throughout the third period to force overtime. Marvin had two shots and Miller had one that was saved to start the overtime, but the Oles ended the game 1:54 into the extra period when Kalli McCullen scored her first goal of the season to give St. Olaf the win.
St. Olaf had 34 shots on net to CSB's 21, and Saint Benedict sophomore
Julia Carle made 30 saves to keep CSB in the game. Miller and Marvin both finished with five shots on net and
Shelby Schneider added three.
CSB and St. Olaf meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 in Northfield.
