Koch’s second-half goal lifts CSB over Carleton

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team stayed undefeated at home and in the MIAC and picked up its sixth win of the season Saturday afternoon when it beat Carleton 2-1.

The Knights scored three minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but CSB scored in the 33rd minute and again in the 63rd minute to improve to 6-1-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the conference. Saturday's win gives Saint Benedict some momentum heading into Wednesday when it travels to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg, which is 2-0 in the conference.

Carleton (0-7-2, 0-2-1) started the scoring early Saturday afternoon when Madeline Topf scored on a header off a corner kick just three minutes into the game. The Knights held the lead until the 33rd minute when Brooke DeMets scored her second goal of the season off a penalty kick from Taylor Hedin. Hedin's kick went to the far right corner of the net where DeMets was able to tap it past the Knights' keeper.

The score stayed tied at 1-1 heading into halftime, and the second half was scoreless for nearly 20 minutes until sophomore Jane Koch scored her sixth goal of the season. Koch came streaking down the middle of the field, took a pass from Hedin and shot the ball past Carleton keeper Elaine Sundberg to put CSB up 2-1, which is how the score stayed when regulation ended.

Carleton outshot Saint Benedict 16-12, including an 11-7 edge in shots on net, but CSB keeper Heather Kaluzniak made eight saves to help preserve the win. The Knights had several chances early, but Kaluzniak had seven first-half saves to hold the Knights to a single goal.

CSB is on the road Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game at Augsburg, but returns home Saturday, Oct. 1, when it hosts St. Kate's at 1 p.m.
