CSB soccer ties with No. 10 UST

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Heading into Wednesday, St. Thomas hadn't given up a single goal in five games played.

Wednesday, Jane Koch changed that really fast.

After a delayed start due to lightning, Koch scored off an assist from Taylor Hedin 10 seconds into the game to help lift CSB to a 1-1 tie with the Tommies, who are ranked 10th in Division III. CSB is now 5-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference.

The game did not go to overtime due to more lightning in the area and impending darkness as CSB's field does not have lights.

Koch's shot was the first of the game, and all CSB needed Wednesday. She took a pass from Hedin to the right of the net to draw out UST goalie Tarynn Theilig and kicked it past her to put CSB up 1-0. Thirteen minutes into the game there was another half-hour delay due to lightning, and coming off the delay UST woke up and scored its first and only goal of the game in the 24th minute When Mallory DeBoom scored off assists from Taylor Skorik and Emily Michaelson.

Both teams had chances to take the lead – CSB had three other shots on net in the first half and three in the second, including one in the final minutes of the game – and St. Thomas had five second-half shots on net, but both Theilig and CSB goalie Heather Kaluzniak stood their ground.

Kaluzniak finished the game with six saves for CSB. Both St. Thomas and Saint Benedict had 15 shots, including seven on net. Hedin and Koch both had two shots on net for CSB.

Saint Benedict is back at home Saturday, Sept. 24, when it hosts Carleton at 1 p.m.
