WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team started MIAC play with a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minn.
CSB, which is now 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, scored three goals before halftime and added one more in the final 15 minutes of the game to wrap up scoring.
Saint Benedict opened the scoring in the 11
th minute when
Jane Koch netted her fourth goal of the year off an assist from
Brooke DeMets. DeMets scored a goal of her own – her first of the season – just over a minute later to put CSB up 2-0, and Saint Benedict made it 3-0 less than 20 minute in when
Taylor Hedin scored her third goal of the season in the 19
th minute.
Saint Mary's (1-3-1, 0-2) came out of halftime and scored its only goal of the game in the 46
th minute, but CSB wrapped up scoring in the 77
th minute when
Nicole Newman scored the first goal of her collegiate career off an assist from Hedin.
CSB outshot the Cardinals 17-9, including a 9-6 margin in shots on goal. Senior goalie
Heather Kaluzniak earned the win for CSB and made five saves, and
Kendall Koenen also saw time in net for Saint Benedict.
CSB returns to action and wraps up nonconference play Sunday, Sept. 18, when it travels to River Falls, Wis., to take on UW-River Falls at 2 p.m.
