AUSTIN, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team appeared to be on its way to its fourth win of the season Saturday afternoon.
CSB scored less than 20 minutes into its game against Luther College, and held onto that lead until the final five minutes of regulation. The Norse scored in the 85
th minute to send it into overtime, but neither team could score again, so the game ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime in Austin, Minn. The game was scheduled to be played in Decorah, Iowa, but was moved due to flooding at Luther's home field.
Saint Benedict sophomore
Jane Koch got her team on the board in the 18
th minute of the first half. She scored her third goal of the year when she deflected a shot in off the right corner of the goal off an assist from
Ali Ryan-Mosley to make it 1-0.
Heather Kaluzniak stopped one shot in the first half and two more in the second, and first-year goalie
Kendall Koenen came in for the final eight minutes of regulation when Melisse Chasse scored for Luther in the 85
th minute to tie the game.
Kaluzniak was back in net for CSB in overtime, and she made two more saves for CSB in the first overtime and one in the second to help preserve the tie.
Luther (1-0-1) outshot CSB 17-6, including 7-3 in shots on net, but Kaluzniak and Koenen teamed up to make six saves to help keep the Norse out of the net.
CSB is on the road again Sunday, Sept. 11, when it takes on No. 18 Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. That game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but has been changed to a 1 p.m. start.
