ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team started the 2016 season in dramatic fashion Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime win against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Blugolds (0-1) scored in the first 15 minutes of the game, and held onto that lead for the next 70-plus minutes. Despite a few good chances, Saint Benedict (1-0) was unable to find the back of the net until late in the 83
rd minute.
Then, sophomore transfer
Jane Koch took a pass from teammate
Taylor Hedin in the middle of the field and sent the ball past Eau Claire's goalie and into the net to tie the score at 1-1. The score remained tied as regulation ended seven minutes later, but Koch made sure the two teams didn't need a second overtime. She took another pass from Hedin – this time on the left side of UWEC's net – and scored again with just over four minutes left in the first overtime to end the game.
It was Eau Claire that got the scoring going early in the first half when Danielle Jensen netted the game's first goal at the 11-minute mark. After that, however,
Heather Kaluzniak and
Kendall Koenen teamed up to keep the Blugolds out of the net and help CSB hold on for the win.
CSB had a shot at tying the score earlier in the game when Hedin took a shot that hit the post, got her own rebound and took another hard shot, but the UWEC goalie made the save. Saint Benedict finished the night with eight shots on net to UWEC's three.
Saint Benedict has a short turnaround after Thursday's long game as it takes the field right away Friday morning in an 11:30 a.m. matinee against Whitworth. CSB is also at home Monday, Sept. 5, at 3:30 p.m. against UW-Oshkosh.
