Kylie Eklund scored twice and the College of Saint Benedict hockey team scored three goals in the third period to come from behind and tie the Augsburg Auggies 3-3 today (February 19
th). With the tie, the Blazers record moves to 7-14-3 (5-9-3 MIAC). Meanwhile, the Auggies clinched a playoff berth, and their record becomes 12-9-3 (9-5-3 MIAC). Today was also the last home game for seniors
Siri Berg-Moberg,
Liz Hermes,
Aly Hoffman, and
Dory Johnson.
The Auggies scored their first goal of the game less than two minutes after the initial faceoff. Auggie forward Kayla Fuechtmann took a pass from teammate Abigail Dickinson and sent a slap shot under the pad of Blazer goalie
Dory Johnson.
The Auggies outshot the Blazers 11-4 in the rest of the period, but Johnson came up with several clutch glove saves and the score remained 0-1 at the first intermission.
Halfway through the second period, the Auggies added their second goal. Danielle Heitkemp took a pass from Fuechtmann and knocked the puck past Johnson to give the Auggies the 2-0 lead. The Blazers spent four minutes on the power play that period, but were unable to convert any of their scoring opportunities into goals.
The floodgates opened for the Blazer offense in the third period. Sophomore forward
Brigette Miller got the scoring started five minutes into the period when she took a pass from
Hannah Esselman and shot the puck past Auggie goalie Erika Allen. That goal was Miller's ninth of the season, and cut the Auggie lead to 2-1.
The Auggies responded four minutes later when Megan Johnson scored off an assist from Sarah Buckner. That goal gave the Auggies a 3-1 lead with ten minutes to play.
With seven minutes to play, first-year
Kylie Eklund stole the puck from an Auggie defender, skated the length of the ice, and scored to cut the Auggie lead to 3-2. That goal was Ecklund's first career goal as a Blazer. She wouldn't have to wait long to get her second.
With just under four minutes to play, Ecklund struck again. This time she grabbed a rebound off a shot from
Allison Kirk and slapped it past Allen to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into overtime.
The Auggies outshot the Blazers 5-3 in overtime, but neither team was able to muster a great scoring opportunity, and the game ended as a draw.
The Auggies outshot the Blazers 37-27. Johnson led both goalies with 34 saves on 37 shtos.
Blazer hockey will round out its season tomorrow, when it will travel to Minneapolis to play Augsburg on their home ice. Faceoff is scheduled for 4p.m.
