MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – For the second day in a row, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team and Augsburg needed overtime to decide the outcome of the game, but Saturday afternoon the Auggies came out on top.
The Blazers ended their season with a 3-2 overtime loss at Augsburg in Minneapolis. CSB ends the season 7-15-3 overall and 5-10-3 and in eighth in the MIAC.
First-year goalie
Angel Hillstrom got the start, and added 31 saves to her season total. She wraps up her first season with CSB with 522 total saves and a .929 save percentage – which is a new school record. The previous record was .923, set in 2008-09 by Abbie Helminen.
The Auggies, who are 13-9-3 overall and 10-5-3 in the MIAC and earned the No. 3 seed in the league's postseason tournament, started the scoring two minutes into the second period when Bridget Walter scored. Senior
Aly Hoffman tied the game in the 13
th minute off assists from
Liz Hermes and
Hannah Esselman, but Augsburg went up 2-1 less than three minutes later on a power play goal by Ashley Kloncz.
The Auggies held onto their lead until the sixth minute of the third period, when
Allison Kirk tied the game on a goal off assists from
Shelby Schneider and
Stephanie Kirk. The two teams combined for 15 third-period shots, but no one was able to score, so the game went into overtime. Augsburg scored the game-winner at the 2:27 mark of overtime on a goal by Megan Johnson.
CSB finished with 24 shots on net to Augsburg's 34.
Elli Marvin had five shots on net and
Brigette Miller added four.
Saturday's game marked the final college game for Hoffman, Hermes,
Siri Berg-Moberg and
Dory Johnson. CSB returns several key players in 2016-17, including Hillstrom in net and Marvin and Miller – who led the team with 16 points each – on offense.
