ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team's shots on goal were all incredibly accurate Saturday afternoon against Bethel – CSB just didn't have enough of them.
Saint Benedict scored two goals off two shots on net against the Royals, but Bethel was one ahead of CSB. The Royals beat CSB 3-2 Saturday in St. Joseph, marking the team's first home loss this season. The loss also marked just the second conference loss of the year for CSB, which is now 7-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC.
Bethel (10-1-1, 5-0-0) got on the board in the 35
th minute when Rachel Ness kicked in a ball that came loose after a scrum in front of the net. The Royals took that lead into halftime, and CSB tied the score four minute into the second half when
Taylor Hedin scored her ninth goal of the season to make it 1-1. Following a corner kick by
Olivia Musser, Jeanna Kleason got her head on the ball to get it to Hedin, who tapped in into the net.
The Royals took less than a minute to tie the game, however, as Mikala Nordin took a pass on the left side of the box and beat
Heather Kaluzniak to put Bethel back up, 2-1 in the 50
th minute. Bethel scored the eventual game-winner in the 61
st minute when Maria Retting took a pass and kicked the ball over Kaluzniak's head and into the net.
CSB made it a one-goal game in the 67
th minute when
Brooke DeMets scored to make it 3-2, but that's as close as CSB would get.
Bethel had 14 shots to CSB's five, and held a 9-2 margin in shots on net. Kaluzniak finished with five saves.
Saint Benedict has a short turnaround to its next game as it hits the road Tuesday, Oct. 11, to take on Gustavus in St. Peter, Minn.
