Hedin’s hat trick lifts CSB past St. Kate’s

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – For the first 68 minutes of play Saturday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team and St. Kate's were both scoreless. Then Taylor Hedin took over.

Hedin scored three goals in 10 minutes to break a scoreless tie and lift CSB to a 3-1 win over the Wildcats in St. Joseph. The hat trick was the first of her career, and the first for CSB soccer since at least 2008. It pushed her season totals to eight goals and 22 points, which are both in the top two in the MIAC.

After a first half where CSB goalie Heather Kaluzniak made two saves and St. Kate's goalie had four saves to keep the game scoreless, Hedin started her scoring frenzy in the 68th minute off a pass from Nicole Newman to make it 1-0. She scored the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute, this one off a pass from Jane Koch, and, just over two minutes later, completed the hat trick with a third goal. Her final goal of the game came off an assist from Abby Welsch.

The Wildcats (6-2-1, 2-1-1) broke up the shutout in the 82nd minute when Hannah Okerstrom scored off an assist from Nicole Palsgrove, but Hedin's three goals were enough to allow CSB to hold on for the win.

CSB – which is now 7-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC – had 13 shots to St. Kate's 15, but had 11 shots on net to the Wildcats' six. Hedin finished with seven shots on goal and Koch added three. Kalunziak finished the game with five saves.

Saint Benedict is off now until Saturday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Bethel at 1 p.m.
