CSB looks to push winning streak to five against Bethel

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team had a big overtime win over Hamline earlier this week with a score of 60-57. After improving their record to 13-5, the Blazers will be at home to take on the Bethel University Royals for their eighth consecutive MIAC game. The game takes places at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30.
 
About the Royals: The Royals started out their season with a .500 record through their first 10 games. From there they have gone 5-3 and are 6-5 in conference play. The Royals will be heading into the game against the Blazers coming off of a 79-65 loss to Gustavus Adolphus and looking to snap a two-game losing streak.
 
Last Meeting: The Royals beat the Blazers 62-55 Dec. 12 at Bethel in the two teams' first meeting this year. The Royals got out to an early lead, and led 20-13 after the first quarter, and held on to give the Blazers their second conference loss.  Niki Fokken led CSB with 16 points and Chelsey Guetter had 10 rebounds.
 
The Storyline: The Blazers have now won six of their last seven games, all against conference opponents. They will be playing at home after five straight road games. Bethel will be heading into this matchup having lost their last two games, and a 2-4 record in away games. The Blazers will be looking to improve their MIAC record of 8-3. CSB is tied for third in the MIAC with Concordia and Gustavus.
 
What to Watch: Niki Fokken currently leads the Blazers with 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Alison Newton averages another 8.8 points per game and 2.9 assists per game. Grace Wolhowe is currently leading the MIAC with a .481 three-point percentage.
 
Last Time Out: In their last game, the Blazers took a big conference win over Hamline with a score of 60-57 in overtime. In the first quarter, Hamline shot well and took the lead finishing the quarter up 18-11 over CSB. The Blazers out played the Pipers and cut the lead in the second quarter, and went into the locker rooms down 30-27. Newton scored nine of the Blazers 15 points in the third quarter and the Blazers entered the final quarter down by one, with a score of 43-42.  In the fourth quarter, all knotted up at 53-53 the Blazers missed two shots with under ten seconds left to send the game into overtime. In a hard fought matchup, the Blazers showed up when it counted and finish overtime with a score of 60-57 and a Blazer win.  Fokken led the team with 16 points and had eight rebounds. Newton added 14 points, and Guetter grabbed 11 rebounds.
