ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team took a big overtime win over Gustavus Adolphus College this week by a score of 70-61. After improving their record to 11-5, the Blazers will be heading out to Northfield to face off against St. Olaf for their sixth consecutive MIAC game. The game takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23.
About the Oles: The Oles started out their season with six consecutive wins after falling to Wartburg College in their first game of the season. From here, they have gone 5-4 with three wins and four losses in conference play. The Oles will be heading into their matchup against the Blazers coming off a 60-54 loss to St. Thomas.
Last Meeting: St. Olaf edged the Blazers 50-47 Dec. 5 in Claire Lynch Hall in the two teams' first meeting this year. The Blazers led 10-8 after one quarters, but the Oles outscored CSB in the second and third quarters and held on for the slim win.
Annie Dittberner had 13 points and
Kate Banovetz finished with eight. Ali Newton had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Storyline: The Blazers have now won four of their last five games, which were all conference matchups. They will be heading into this matchup with a lot of momentum that they will be looking to extend as they push through the middle of their conference season. St. Olaf will be heading into this matchup after going 2-3 in their last five games. They will be looking use their home-court advantage to improve their conference record, which currently sits at 5-4.
Who to Watch: Fokken currently leads the Blazers with 9.6 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game as
Annie Dittberner averages another 9.1 points in each game.
Alison Newton also averages 2.9 assists per game and
Grace Wolhowe is currently leading the MIAC with a .480 three-point percentage.
Last Time Out: In their last game, the Blazers took a big overtime win over Gustavus with a score of 70-61. In the first quarter, the Gusties took an early lead and finished the quarter with a 17-15 lead. The two teams then went back and forth throughout the second quarter and finished the half with a Gustie's lead of 29-27. From here, the Blazers pushed through the third quarter and took the lead after scoring 14 points and holding the Gusties to 10. As the score sat at 41-39 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Gusties came back and tied the game at 55-55. The Blazers then pushed through overtime and finished with 15 points as they held the Gusties to just six points.
Chelsey Guetter and Allison Newton both finished the night with 12 points, and
Macy Kelly added another 11 points. Guetter also finished the night with eight rebounds as Fokken added nine.
