ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team picked up a huge win against Concordia Saturday afternoon, and the Blazers look to use that momentum Wednesday night when they travel to take on No. 19 St. Thomas in St. Paul. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. on the St. Thomas campus.
About the Tommies
St. Thomas heads into Wednesday's MIAC matchup coming off an 80-60 loss to Bethel on Saturday. Prior to the loss, the Tommies were ranked ninth in Division III. UST is currently part of a five-way tie for second in the league at 4-2 that includes the Blazers, Royals, Concordia and Gustavus. Kaitlin Langer leads the MIAC in scoring (17.8) and field-goal percentage (.580) and is fifth in rebounds per game (8.6). Gabby Zehrer is also ninth in the MIAC in scoring (13.6).
Last Season
The Tommies swept a pair of games against CSB last season, winning 75-58 on Dec. 6 in St. Paul and again 80-57 on Jan. 24 in St. Joseph when they were ranked fourth in Division III.
Kate Banovetz scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the January loss.
Saint Benedict heads into Wednesday's game at 9-4 overall, tied for fifth in the MIAC and on a two-game winning streak. After beating Macalester in overtime on Wednesday, the Blazers stormed past Concordia – which was second in the MIAC – 64-44 in their biggest win of the year.
Niki Fokken, who was named CSB's Athlete of the Week, scored 17 points and had career-high rebounds (12) and blocked shots (6) in the win against the Scots, and she added 10 more points against Concordia.
Alison Newton (12),
Annie Dittberner (11) and
Chelsey Guetter (10) also hit double digits in scoring against the Cobbers and Dittberner also had five assists.
Wednesday's game is the first of five road games for CSB. That stretch of road games includes Gustavus, which is also tied for second in the league, St. Olaf, Augsburg and Hamline.
