MENOMONIE, Wis. – A pair of goals within five minutes of each other in the second half was all the scoring that the College of Saint Benedict and UW-Stout soccer teams managed Saturday afternoon. The two teams finished the game tied 1-1 after two overtimes in a nonconference matchup in Menomonie, Wis.
After a scoreless first half, Stout (0-0-2) got on the board first when Addy Maher scored off a pass from Sydney Kasper in the 53
rd minute. The Blazers only allowed Stout to hold onto the lead for about four minutes and 30 seconds, however, as
Kelsey Tatarek tied the game on an unassisted goal in the 57
th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
That's where the scoring ended for the game, as neither team was able to find the back of the net again despite one shot on goal for each team in the overtime.
Blazer goalie
Heather Kaluzniak made three first-half saves to keep the Blue Devils off the board early, and she added one more save in the second half and one in the first overtime for five saves on the day. Saint Benedict held a 14-13 edge in shots over Stout, including a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. CSB had a shot on goal in the second overtime but couldn't capitalize.
Tatarek scored her first goal of the season on her lone shot on goal. Alyssa Hoffman,
Brooke DeMets,
Taylor Hedin and
Reina Nelson all tallied a shot on net for the Blazers. Nelson's shot came in the final two minutes of the second overtime, but Stout goalie Paige Meyer made the save.
The Blazers are back in action for their second game of the Wisconsin road trip at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, when they take on UW-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wis.
