CSB soccer falls to Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team suffered its first setback of the season Saturday evening when it fell 2-1 to rival Loras College.

The Blazers (2-1-1) were hoping for a second-straight win against Loras after defeating the Duhawks 3-1 last season in Collegeville, Minn. Loras knocked the Blazers out of the NCAA tournament in 2013.

The Duhawks struck first early in the game, and added all the scoring they would need less than six minutes later. Danielle Vujovic scored the first goal of the game unassisted just 2:30 into the game, and Gretchen Schutz scored the game-winner at the 8:12 mark of the first half.

The Blazers were held off the scoreboard in the first half, and their lone goal of the game came in the 71st minute when Taylor Hedin knocked in an errant pass by the Duhawks. CSB had two shots after that, but both went wide and Loras was able to hold on for the win.

Saint Benedict finished the game with 13 shots to Loras' 11, but the Duhawks held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Heather Kaluzniak made four saves for CSB and Maria Siebels made four saves for Loras.

The Blazers are off now until Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20 when they return home for a pair of matches. CSB opens MIAC play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 when it hosts Saint Mary's, and the Blazers are back at home at 2 p.m. Sunday against Luther.
