Vaughan Scores Twice as Soccer Shuts Out SMU 5-0

St. Joseph, Minn. -- Senior forward Gracie Vaughan scored two goals, and the College of Saint Benedict soccer team (3-1-1, 1-0 MIAC) rolled to a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary's (2-4, 0-2 MIAC) in their conference opener.

Junior forward Taylor Hedin got the scoring started for the Blazers in the games 24th minute. She received the ball at the top of the box, dribbled down to the corner, and struck the ball into the other side of the net, putting the Blazers up, 1-0.

As soon as that goal was put up on the scoreboard, Vaughan took a pass in the air from senior defender Megan Lenz and volleyed it into the net, giving the Blazers a two-goal lead over the Cardinals.

11 minutes later, sophomore midfielder Kelsey Tatarek was tackled in the box on a breakaway. The referee awarded her a penalty kick. Taterek struck the ball left of diving Cardinal keeper Aubrie Cornell, and the Blazers took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Early in the second half, Vaughan and senior forward Val Clintsman each scored goals within three minutes of each other, and the Blazers held on to win it 5-0.

The score aside, the Blazers dominated possession of the ball the entire game, firing off 16 shots while holding St. Mary's to just two shots, and only one shot on goal. Junior keeper Heather Kaluzniak easily secured that one attempt on net, and recorded her 15th career shutout as a Blazer.

With three players scoring their second goal of the season today, the Blazers now have five players who have at least two goals this through fives games this season. Only senior forward Aly Hoffman has scored more than twice (3)

The Blazers return to action tomorrow (Sept. 20th), when they will host Luther College (5-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
