ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict and Macalester softball teams got one game in Sunday afternoon, but the second was halted due to inclement weather that rolled through the area.
Macalester beat the Blazers 3-1 in the first game, but the second was halted with the game tied in the top of the eighth. CSB and the Scots are tied 4-4 with two outs and no one on base. A makeup date has not yet been determined, but the game will be finished.
It looked like the Blazers would wrap up the second game before the weather hit, but Macalester had other ideas. CSB led 4-2 heading into the fifth inning. The Scots singled and pushed their runner to third on a sac bunt and the game was put into a short lightening delay. Coming out of the delay, Macalester scored one run on an RBI single, and scored a second run on a single and a Blazer throwing error to tie the game at 4-4.
Neither team got a runner on base in the bottom of fifth or top of sixth, but the Blazers got a rally going in the sixth. With two outs,
Nicole Nelson and
Kim Lidstone singled, but Kiela DeVlaemnick popped up to end the threat. CSB got runners on again in the seventh when
Megan Toninato singled and
Sara Wennerstrand reached on a fielder's choice.
Kristen Eustice came in to run for Wennerstrand and she was able to steal second and then advance to third on a groundout by
Jessica Davison, but
Becky Gigstad flied out to end the inning.
The Blazers got Macalester's first two batters to fly out to center field in the eighth inning before the game was halted.
CSB scored a single run in each of the first four innings. Wennerstrand had an RBI single in the first, Lidstone hit into an RBI groundout in the second and Gigstad had an RBI single in the third to make it 3-2.
Emma Steck put the Blazers up 4-2 with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning.
Melissa Seldon threw all 7.2 innings for the Blazers so far in the second game. She gave up four runs on nine hits. CSB has eight hits and Lidstone and Toninato are each 2-for-4.
The first game of the doubleheader was equally as close. The Scots got on the board first when GG Gunther singled, stole second and scored unearned when Miranda Stokes reached on an error. The Blazers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Nelson singled and advanced on a bunt by Lidstone. Nelson made it to third when
Bailey O'Hotto singled, and Nelson came around to score on a sac fly by Toninato.
Macalester had an answer, though, and scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Anna Munson reached on an error and Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, and both advanced on a sac bunt. Stokes hit a two-run double to put the Scots up 3-1, and that's all the runs they would need. The Blazers failed to get a runner on base in the seventh.
Nelson had a pair of hits for CSB, which had four hits to Macalester's eight.
Cassie Meyer threw all seven innings and took the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits. She struck out four batters.
CSB's next scheduled game is Tuesday, April 14, when it hosts Saint Mary's at 4 p.m. on the CSB campus.
