Blazers drop two close games to No. 10 Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict softball team gave the 10th-ranked team in the country all it could handle Friday afternoon, but came up just short. The Blazers fell 10-9 and 6-2 to Simpson College – ranked No. 10 in the latest NFCA Division III poll – as part of the Simpson/Central Tournament in Indianola, Iowa.

The doubleheader marked the first time on the field in nearly three weeks for the Blazers, who hadn't played since March 7 prior to Friday's nonconference games. CSB is now 9-7 overall heading into two more games Saturday morning.

In the first game of the day, Saint Benedict took a 2-0 lead after the top of the second thanks to RBI doubles from Mackenzie Wenner and Nicole Nelson. Simpson (20-2) made it 5-2 in the bottom of the inning when, with two outs, the Storm scored on an error and added four more runs on a three-run home and then a solo homer. Kim Lidstone singled and scored on an error to make it 5-3 in the fifth, but Simpson scored two more on a pair of hits and a Blazer error in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Becky Gigstad hit a three-run homer to make it 7-6, but the Storm answered yet again with a two-run single and an RBI single. The Blazers nearly tied the game in the top of the seventh Kiela DeVlaeminck hit an RBI single and Melissa Seldon had a two-run double to make it 10-9, but the Storm stranded CSB runners on second and third and the game ended in Simpson's favor.

Lidstone finished 3-for-4 for CSB, which had 16 hits. Gigstad was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Seldon finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Taylor Ellingson threw the first 1.2 innings and took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits. DeVlaeminck threw the final 4.1 innings and gave up five runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Simpson took an early lead in the second game of the day when the Storm's leadoff batter singled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. Saint Benedict took a 2-1 lead in the third when Gigstad doubled and scored on an RBI double from Lidstone, who later scored on an RBI single by Bailey O'Hotto, but that lead was short-lived.

Simpson tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, and made it 5-2 with an RBI groundout and a two-run homer in the fourth. The Storm added a solo homer in the fifth for the final score.

Lidstone finished 3-for-4 for the second straight game and was the only player to have multiple hits for CSB, which finished with seven total hits. Seldon threw the first 3.2 innings and took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits. Cassie Meyer gave up one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of work, and DeVlaeminck threw the final two-thirds of an inning.

The Blazers return to action Saturday, March 28, when they take on St. Norbert College at 11 a.m. and Central College at 1 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
