PELLA, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its four-game Iowa road trip with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon. The Blazers used a three-run homer from
Megan Toninato to defeat St. Norbert 6-5 to start the day, and then upset No. 19 Central College 2-1 thanks to timely hits, solid defense and a well-pitched game by Kiela DeVleminck.
Saint Benedict (11-7) took a 1-0 lead over Central (16-6) in the first inning when
Kim Lidstone walked, stole second and came around to score when
Sara Wennerstrand hit into an RBI fielder's choice. The CSB defense didn't allow a Central runner to pass second base until the fifth inning, and the Blazers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning when, with two outs, Lidstone singled, stole second and scored on an RBI double by
Bailey O'Hotto.
Central got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when a runner reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single. Central nearly tied the game on a sacrifice bunt, but the runner was thrown out at home.
Lidstone and O'Hotto each had two hits for CSB, which finished with six total hits. DeVlaeminck scattered eight hits over seven innings and gave up a single run with three strikeouts.
In CSB's first game of the day, St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Blazers tied it in the third when
Nicole Nelson doubled and scored on an RBI double by Lidstone. The Green Knights made it 3-1 in the fifth thanks to a pair of RBI singles, but the Blazers cut the game to one in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Toninato.
St. Norbert added another run in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Blazers scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the inning.

Kristen Eustice came around to score on a bunt by Nelson, Lidstone walked, O'Hotto singled and Toninato scored all three runners with a three-run homer to put CSB up 6-4. The Green Knights made it a one-run game with a solo homer in the seventh, but the Blazers' lead held up.
Taylor Ellingson finished 3-for-3 to pace CSB. Lidstone, and Toninato each had two hits, and Toninato finished with four RBIs. The Blazers had 11 total hits.
Cassie Meyer threw the first 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Ellingson earned the win after giving up just two runs on four hits, and DeVlaeminck earned the save after throwing the final two-thirds of an inning.
The Blazers are back in action and open MIAC play Monday, March 30, when they host St. Thomas at 3:30 p.m. on the CSB softball fields.
