Miller's OT Goal Lifts Hockey Past Pipers

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The College of Saint Benedict hockey team snagged a much-needed win today, defeating Hamline 3-2 in overtime. First-year sensation Brigette Miller scored the game-winner for the Blazers, scoring off assists from Elli Marvin and Katie Cristan.

With the win, the Blazers improve to 6-9-2 and 5-6-2 in the MIAC. The win snaps a two-game losing streak and puts the Blazers back on the inside looking out for the MIAC playoffs.

Halfway through the first period, with the Pipers on the power play, Piper forward Jordan Verleye scored the first goal of the game. That goal was assisted by Jaci Reinke and gave the Pipers a 1-0 lead. Heading into the first intermission, the Blazers were down 0-1.

The second period however, belonged to the Blazers. To be specific, the period belonged to sophomore forward Allison Kirk. In that period alone, Kirk doubled her goal total for the season. Six minutes into the period, she tied the game off an assist from Kaitlyn Miller. Just five minutes after the first goal, she would strike again, this time rifling a shot from the top of the faceoff area and past the Piper goalie. That goal gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead that they would hold until late in the third.

With just eight minutes to play, Piper forward Kelsey Rafferty took a pass from Haleigh Bolton and pulled her team into a tie.

The game went into overtime, with both teams needing a win to keep any sort of playoff hopes alive. The Blazers opened the period with three straight scoring opportunities, each seemingly closer to being a goal than the last. Miller finally ended the game with less than two minutes on the clock, taking a puck from Marvin and sending past the Piper goalie.

The Blazers outshot the Pipers 41-34, including 18-7 in the second period. Those 41 shots are the most the Blazers have reeled off in one game this year. Senior goalie Jenna Traut finished with 32 saves on 34 shots.

Blazer hockey returns to action tomorrow when they travel to St. Paul to play Hamline on their ice.  Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
