Three first-period goals doom Blazers in loss to Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team was hoping to use its momentum from its overtime win Thursday against Hamline University to carry it to a season sweep, but the Pipers had other ideas Friday night.

After giving up the winning goal with just over a minute left in overtime Thursday, Hamline came out hot Friday night. The Pipers scored three goals in the first six minutes of play and added an empty-net goal in the final two minutes of the game to come away with a 4-0 win over the Blazers.

Saint Benedict is now 6-10-2 overall and 5-7-2 in the MIAC. Hamline picked up its fourth win of the year and improved to 4-15-2 overall and 2-10-2 in the conference.

Hamline didn't waste any time getting on the board Friday night. The Pipers scored just 2:14 into the first period when Jordan Verleye scored her ninth goal of the season to put Hamline up 1-0. The Pipers added a second goal less than three minutes later when Kelsey Rafferty scored at the 5:07 mark, and the Pipers continued their offensive flurry 50 seconds later when Chelsea Koehn scored to put Hamline up 3-0 with less than six minutes played.

For the next 41 minutes the game was scoreless, and the Blazers tried to claw their way back into the game. CSB had five power-play opportunities to Hamline's two, but couldn't convert. CSB pulled goalie Jenna Traut with just over two minutes left to play to put another forward on the ice, but Hamline found its way through the Blazer defense and made it 4-0 when Koehn scored an empty-net goal with just over a minute left to play.

Saint Benedict finished with 29 shots on goal to the Pipers' 33. Brigette Miller and Megan Brettingen led the team with five shots on goal a piece and Liz Hermes finished with three. Traut finished the night with 29 saves. Mary Shefveland had 29 saves to preserve the shutout for Hamline.

CSB returns back at home Friday, Feb. 13, when it hosts Bethel University at 7 p.m. at the MAC. The Blazers have just four games left in the regular season.
