ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team kept its postseason hopes alive with a huge win over St. Thomas Friday night at the MAC. The Blazers used the excitement of senior night to upset the Tommies, who are receiving votes in Division III, 5-3, and CSB headed into Saturday looking for a second straight upset.
St. Thomas was not going to be upset twice in a row, however, and ended the Blazers' season Saturday in St. Paul. After beating UST for the first time in at least 10 years Friday, the Blazers fell 3-1 to the Tommies Saturday afternoon.
Saint Benedict ends the year 7-13-2 overall and 6-10-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas is 12-9-4 overall and 11-3-4 in the conference heading into the postseason tournament.
The Tommies started the scoring seven minutes into the first period Saturday afternoon when Karina Marette scored to put UST up 1-0. St. Thomas took a two-goal lead in the 13
th minute when Rachel Friberg scored, but the Blazers got on the board to cut the Tommies' lead to one late in the first when
Kimberly Patterson scored.
The second period was scoreless until Hannah Bird scored with just four seconds remaining in the period to put the Tommies up 3-1, and that's where the score would stay.
St. Thomas outshot the Blazers 42-19.
Brigette Miller had five shots on goal and
Maddie Rainey finished with two for CSB. Senior goalie
Jenna Traut followed up her huge performance Friday night with 39 more saves Saturday, bringing her weekend total to 85.
Saturday's game marked the final game for CSB's five seniors: Traut,
Megan Brettingen,
Alli O'Brien,
Claire Bjerke and
Tara Frey. The Tommies move on to the MIAC playoffs, which start Tuesday.
