ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – After playing a tough Bethel squad close all the way through in a 3-1 loss Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team was hoping to reverse the score Saturday afternoon in the second game of the season series.
Bethel had other ideas, however, and completed the sweep with a 3-0 win over the Blazers in Arden Hills, Minn. CSB is now 6-12-2 overall and 5-9-2 and in eighth in the MIAC with two games left in the regular season. The Blazers take on St. Thomas – which has already clinched a spot in the six-team postseason tournament – Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21.
The Royals (12-8-3, 7-6-3) started the scoring eight minutes into the first period when Kalie Johnson scored to put Bethel up 1-0. That ended the scoring for the first period, but the Royals added two more goals in the second, both by Kathryn Larson, to go up 3-0.
Saint Benedict outshot Bethel 15-9 in the second, but Royals' goalie Michelle Klimstra stopped all 15 shots to keep the Blazers off the board. Bethel held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal in the final period, but neither team scored and the Royals held on for the 3-0 win.
The Blazers outshot the Royals 26-21, but Klimstra stopped all 26 shots to preserve the shutout.
Jenna Traut made 18 saves for CSB.
Brigette Miller finished with six shots on goal to lead Saint Benedict and
Hannah Esselman added five.
The Blazers host the Tommies, who are second in the MIAC, at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. Friday night's game is also senior night.
