ST. PETER, Minn. – Friday night's overtime tie with No. 9 Gustavus was a huge step in the right direction for the College of Saint Benedict hockey team.
Saturday afternoon, the Blazers made another giant leap.
Saint Benedict, which was winless in the MIAC heading into the weekend, picked up its first conference win of the year when it beat the Gusties 3-2 in overtime thanks to a goal by senior
Siri Berg-Moberg – her first of the season. The win comes one night after a 2-2 overtime tie at the MAC in St. Cloud.
In the past three years, the Blazers are now 3-2-1 against the Gusties, who traditionally have one of the top women's hockey programs in Division III. CSB swept Gustavus – which was No. 7 at the time – in 2013-14, lost a pair of games in 2014-15 and added a win and a tie against the Gusties this season.
"This is all our hard work coming together and our lines finding chemistry," CSB head coach Jen Kranz said. "It's an understatement to say that we haven't been a very prolific scoring team, so to not only score first but to stick it out and score in the last minute and then again in overtime is just fantastic. Everything is coming together.
"All the credit goes to the team. They played hard, and they never gave up."
Heading into the weekend series with Gustavus, the Blazers had just four goals in their first six games played. CSB added two goals Friday night and three more Saturday to more than double their total for the season.
For the second time this weekend, CSB (2-5-1, 1-0-1) got on the board first against Gustavus when sophomore
Natalie Roberts scored her first career goal at the 8:36 mark of the first period. The Gusties tied the game in the 14
th minute, and CSB appeared to take a 2-1 lead on a goal by
Brigette Miller as the buzzer sounded to end the first period, but the refs ruled that the puck didn't cross the plane before the final whistle sounded.
Gustavus took a 2-1 lead three minutes into the second period, and that lead held until the final two minutes of the third period. With the Blazers on the power play, Kranz pulled goalie
Angel Hillstrom to give CSB an extra skater and
Maddie Rainey scored from the blue line to tie the game and send it into overtime.
CSB started overtime shorthanded, but killed the power play and Berg-Moberg picked up the puck on a Gustavus turnover and was able to slide it past Gustavus' goalie for the winning goal.
Saint Benedict finished with 14 shots to Gustavus' 40, but Hillstrom made 38 saves for the second straight game to keep the Blazers in it and earn the win. Rainey, Miller and
Elli Marvin all had three shots on net.
Saint Benedict is back at home for a pair of nonconference games Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12 when it hosts Concordia-Wisconsin. Friday's game is at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's at 1:30 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
