Three Third Period Goals Defeat Blazer Hockey

The College of Saint Benedict hockey team (2-6-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) dropped a game to the Concordia University (3-7-1, 2-6-0 NCHA) Falcons today. After leading by 1-0 through the first two periods, three Falcon goals in the third period gave them a 3-2 victory.

The Falcons had trouble keep five players on the ice in the first period, spending nearly six minutes of the period down a skater. After the Falcons killed the first two penalties, the Blazers capitalized on the third.  Junior forward Elli Marvin grabbed a rebound off a shot from junior forward Allison Kirk, and the Blazers took a 1-0 lead. That goal was Marvin's third of the year and puts her in a tie with sophomore forward Brigette Miller for the team lead.

A couple impressive saves from first-year goalie and reigning MIAC athlete of the Week Angel Hillstrom allowed the Blazers to maintain their lead over the Falcons in the second period.

With nine minutes to play and the Blazers on the power play, Falcon forward Brandi Muller poked the puck away from a Blazer at mid-ice and had an open break away on Hillstrom. Muller tried to deke out Hillstrom with a cross over but Hillstrom quickly moved across the crease to make the pad save.  With two minutes to play, a quick glove-save on a tipped shot kept the Falcons scoreless.

After being shutout through two periods, the Falcon offense scored twice in the first four minutes of the third period. The Falcons got goals from Lexi Machuga (from Metanova) and Chelsea Regan (from Pauletti) and took a 2-1 lead over the Blazers.

Two minutes later, the Blazers found an answer via the stick of Miller. After a shot from Miller was saved by Falcon goal Christina Pattengale, first year-forward Maddie Dockry grabbed the rebound and fed Miller for the easy goal. The goal was Miller's fourth of the year and allowed her to take the sole team lead in goals.

With four mintues to play, Veronika Metanova grabbed a rebound and put it past Hillstrom, securing the 3-2 victory for the Falcons. Lexi Holman assisted that goal.

Despite the loss, the Blazers outshot the Falcons 29-24, the first time the Blazers have outshot an opponent and lost this year. Hillstrom made 21 saves in net for the Blazers.

Saint Benedict hockey returns to action tomorrow (Dec. 12th) against the Falcons. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
