St. Cloud, Minn. -- A dramatic overtime goal from junior forward Allison Kirk gave the College of Saint Benedict hockey team (3-6-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) a 3-2 victory over the Concordia University Falcons (4-7-1, 2-6-0 NHCA) today. The win was a big bounce back for the Blazers, after they gave up three third-period goals in a loss last night against Concordia.
Â
After scoring the game-winner last night, Falcon forward Veronika Metanova put the Falcons on the board first today. Just three minutes into the game, she slapped a shot that found its way through traffic and into the net. That goal was unassisted.
Â
Four minutes into the second period, junior defender Kacee Medved took a pass from first-year forward Jessica Malloy and flipped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Falcon goaltender Allison Kurel. That goal was Medved's first of the year. In the second period first-year goalie Angel Hillstrom stopped 11 Falcon shots through the rest of the period to keep the game tied at 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
Â
After a nearly scoreless third period, the teams traded goals in an exciting final three minutes to send the game into overtime. At the 17:45 mark, first-year forward Maddie Dockry tapped a shot in from the front of the net off a pair of quick passes from junior defender Maddie Rainey and sophomore forward Brigette Miller. That goal was Dockry's first collegiate goal, and gave the Blazers a brief 2-1 lead.
Â
The Falcons responded by pulling their goalie, and used the player advantage to tie the game with 46 seconds left on the clock. That goal was scored by Lexi Holman, and sent the game into overtime.
Â
Two minutes into the overtime period, a tripping penalty on Falcon forward Nicole Krumwiede put the Blazers on the power play. After a couple of shots of close shots from Marvin and Kirk were saved, a diving Kirk poked the puck past the Falcon goaltender, and the Blazers won the game 3-2.
Â
Despite the win, the Blazers were outshot by the Falcons 28-20. Hillstrom made 26 saves for CSB.
Â
The Blazers are off for finals and Christmas break, and return to action on January 8th and 9th, when they will host St. Norbert's.
