Miller's Third-Period Goal Gives Hockey 2-2 Tie Against No. 9 Gustavus

Interview with Brigette Miller after the game-tying goal

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict hockey team scrapped its way to a big 2-2 draw against No. 9 Gustavus Friday at the MAC in St. Cloud. The Gusties came into the game with losses only to the No. 6, No. 2 and No. 1 teams in the country.

The hero of the game for the Blazers was first-year goalie Angel Hillstrom, who saved 38 shots to keep the Blazers in the game all night. Friday was likely the first matchup of many between Hillstrom the MIAC's other first-year sensation, Gustie goaltender Amanda DiNella.

After being swept by Hamline last weekend, the Blazers looked like a new team on the ice Friday. They came out in the first period firing on all cylinders. Outside a two-minute power play, the Blazers used an aggressive fore-check to control even possession of the puck.  Although both had opportunities to score, the teams went into the locker rooms in a scoreless tie.

The Blazers came out aggressive again in the second period. Just two minutes into the period, sophomore forward Allison Kirk took a pass from senior defender Siri Berg-Moberg and flicked it past DiNella, giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead. That goal was Kirk's first of the year.

The Gusties responded to the Blazers' attack four minutes later, scoring off a goal off the stick of forward Katy Fuller. That goal was assisted by Lane Fischer and Erin Moes. At the second intermission, the teams again went into the locker room all knotted up.

In the third period, it was the Gusties who scored first, getting a goal from Erica Power at 10:13 in the third period. That goal was assisted by Courtney Bethune.

With less than two minutes to play in the game, the Blazers found themselves down by a goal, but still in the game.  With 1:12 to play, a mix-up on the Gustie bench put too many players on the ice. The Blazers responded by pulling their goalie, and giving themselves a 6-on-4 advantage. Shortly after the ensuing faceoff, sophomore forward Brigette Miller grabbed a rebound off a shot from junior forward Elli Marvin and fired it past DiNella, tying the game and sending it into overtime.

Both teams had multiple opportunities to score in the second half, but neither was able to capitalize on those opportunities and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Blazer hockey returns to action Saturday when they will travel to St. Peter to play the Gusties on their home ice. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
