ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team wraps up the MIAC portion of its 2015 schedule Saturday, Dec. 12, when it travels to Arden Hills to take on Bethel. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Blazers have the chance to make history Saturday afternoon as they are currently one win shy of 500 MIAC wins since the women's basketball program joined the league in 1985. Heading into the game, CSB is 499-137 in the league. Saint Benedict looks to become the third women's basketball program in the league to hit 500 wins as St. Thomas and Concordia both have 540 or more wins.
About the Royals
Bethel, which was picked to win the MIAC, is currently 1-2 in the league and 3-4 overall. The Royals opened conference play with a win over St. Kate's, but is coming off back-to-back losses to Concordia and Gustavus. Hannah Johnson leads the team with a 71 percent field-goal percentage. Molly O'Toole (11.7) and Shanni Moorse (11.6) both average double digits in scoring, and O'Toole also averages 7.4 points per game. Four other players average at least six points per game for Bethel.
Last Meeting
The two teams split a pair of conference games last season, with each team winning on its home court. The Blazers beat the Royals 69-55 Jan. 3 in St. Joseph, but Bethel won 73-59 Feb. 7 in St. Paul.
Alison Newton had 10 points and
Niki Fokken finished with nine points and seven rebounds in CSB's win and
Annie Dittberner had 13 points for CSB in its loss in February.
The Storyline
The Blazers are looking to make program history as well as gain some ground in the MIAC before the holiday break, while Bethel heads into today looking to pick up a much-needed conference win. Both teams are looking to gain some momentum heading into the break and head into 2016 on a high note.
About the Blazers
CSB bounced back from a tough loss to St. Olaf last weekend with a big win over Hamline Wednesday. The Blazers beat the Pipers 65-46 thanks to balanced scoring from their lineup.
Kate Banovetz led the team with 10 points,
Grace Wolhowe added nine and Ke'Avae Taylor finished with eight.
Chelsey Guetter is currently 12
th (7.0) and Fokken 13
th (6.9) in the MIAC in rebounds per game. Dittberner leads the team in scoring (10.1), but Wolhowe (9.5) and Fokken (9.1) are right behind.
