CSB volleyball hosts Carleton in MIAC Quarterfinals

Live Stats/Video

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After taking a big 3-0 sweep of Concordia Saturday, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team hosts one of the first-round MIAC Tournament matches Tuesday, Nov. 3.  The Blazers face off against Carleton College in Claire Lynch Hall at 7 p.m.

Tickets for Tuesday's MIAC quarterfinal match are $7 for adults and $3 for students. MIAC passes are the only pass that allows fans into the game for free throughout the MIAC postseason. Thanks to the CSB Senate and CSB athletics, all CSB|SJU students get in free.

About the Knights: With a conference record of 5-6, the Knights head into the first round of the MIAC Tournament with the No. 6 seed. The Knights finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-9 and finished 3-2 in their last five matches. Sitting as the lowest-ranked team in the postseason, the Knights will head into this matchup fighting to take an underdog win to keep their season alive. Lucy Stevens leads the MIAC with 4.32 kills per set and she's third in the conference with 363 total kills. Camille Benson is first in the MIAC with 6.65 digs per set.

Last Meeting: Carleton has come away victorious in each of the last two meetings between CSB and the Knights – and both have been in Claire Lynch Hall. Carleton won 3-1 earlier this season on Oct. 7, and it beat the Blazers by the same score last season in St. Joseph. In the 2015 regular-season meeting, the Knights on the first set 25-19, but CSB came back to take the second set 25-22 before the Knights buckled down to win the third and fourth sets 25-19 and 25-17. Laura Schmitt and Briana Schmiesing each had 13 kills to lead CSB. Carleton had 13 service aces and CSB made nine service errors earlier this season.

The Storyline: Each team heads into this round with hopes of continuing their season, and each has different advantages they look to use. The Blazers head into the match looking for revenge after suffering a 3-1 loss to the Knights earlier in the season. Although the Blazers have a higher conference ranking, they will be heading into the match knowing the Knights have already beat them once this season, and look to use their home court advantage. Carleton comes in as the No. 6 seed, but the Knights know how to win in Claire Lynch, and they look to keep that two-match streak alive.

Who to Watch: Megan Pekarek earned MIAC Setter/Libero of the Week honors for the second straight week and the third time this season after recording her third straight triple-double last week. She leads the MIAC with 971 assists and 9.61 assists per set. Schmitt currently leads the Blazers with 361 kills and sits at fourth place in the MIAC with 3.57 kills per set. Briana Schmiesing also sits with 2.19 kills per set and set a career-high with 21 kills against Augsburg, and Lauren Matthews leads the Blazers with .85 blocks per set. Meghan Koop sits with a team-high of 428 digs.

Last Time Out: In their last match of the regular season, the Blazers took a big 3-0 win over Concordia at home. In the first set, the Blazers took a 25-16 win. They went on to take a 28-26 win in the second set and finished the night with a 25-19 win in the final set. Schmiesing led the Blazers with 13 kills and Schmitt added another 12.
