ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team bounced back from a tough, 2-0 loss to Augsburg Wednesday afternoon with a close game – and a win – over St. Kate's Saturday afternoon.
The game was tied 2-2 with eight minutes to go, but senior
Valerie Clintsman knocked in a rebound inside the box to left Saint Benedict to a 3-2 win Saturday in St. Paul. Clintsman's goal, which came in the 82
nd minute, helped push CSB's record to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.
The Blazers took a 2-0 lead early in the game thanks to goals from
Aly Hoffman and
Taylor Hedin. Hoffman scored her fifth goal of the season in the fifth minute when she took a pass, made a move around the goalie and put the ball in the back of the net.
Hedin put CSB up 2-0 in the 18
th minute when she took a pass from
Gracie Vaughan and took a low shot from the right corner of the box.
The Wildcats (4-4-1) got one goal back two minutes later when Hannah Okerstrom scored off a free kick by Allie Boucher. The score stayed 2-1 heading into halftime, but St. Kate's tied the score in the 75
th minute when Okerstrom scored again, this time off a rebound inside the box.
The game stayed tied for less than seven minutes when Clintsman scored her fourth goal of the game when she took a rebound off a shot by Hoffman and put it past the keeper.
Saint Benedict finished with 17 shots to St. Kates' 10, but the Blazers held a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Heather Kaluzniak made two saves for CSB and the Blazers had one save as a team. Danielle Mendez made seven saves for the Wildcats.
CSB is back in St. Paul Wednesday, Oct. 7, when it takes on St. Thomas at 4 p.m.
