ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team lost by a single goal for the fifth time this season Wednesday night when it fell 1-0 to Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
The loss, which marked CSB's third 1-0 loss of the year, puts the Blazers at 7-7-2 overall and 5-5 in the MIAC. Entering the final game of the regular season Saturday, Saint Benedict is tied with Carleton for seventh place. St. Kate's and Concordia are just ahead of the Blazers with 6-4 records.
Wednesday's first half was scoreless, although
Taylor Hedin had a shot on net late in the 29
th minute and
Jenna Kleason and
Aly Hoffman each had shots that went wide.
Peggy Renier had a shot that was blocked less than a minute into the second half, but it was the Scots (9-2-4, 6-1-3) who broke the tie in the 47
th minute when Lydia Codosh scored on a shot from 15 yards out.
Renier and Hoffman each had shots on net and Kelsey Tatrek and
Sydney Bramer both had shots that went wide, but the Blazers were unable to find the back of the net.
Saint Benedict outshot Macalester 9-5, but the Scots finished with five shots on goal to CSB's three.
Heather Kaluzniak made four saves for the Blazers and Rachel Wilson-King stopped all three shots she faced to preserve the shutout for Macalester.
The Blazers wrap up the regular season at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, when they host St. Olaf for senior day. Saturday's game is a must win in order for CSB to keep its playoff hopes alive, and the Blazers also need help around the league to earn a spot in the six-team postseason tournament.
