ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team's defense stood strong and
Jenna Traut had a huge game in the net Saturday, but for the second day in a row it all came down to power plays for Gustavus.
Gustavus Adolphus, ranked No. 6 in Division III, scored a pair of power play goals against the Blazers in the first period, and that's all it ended up needing. The Gusties won 2-0 to complete the season sweep against CSB at the MAC in St. Cloud, Minn.
Saint Benedict is now 5-9-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the MIAC. The Blazers are now tied for seventh with St. Kate's, which tied with Bethel Saturday afternoon. Gustavus has a firm hold on first in the conference with an 11-0-1 MIAC mark and a 15-2-2 overall record.
The first half of the first period was scoreless, but CSB was assessed a pair of penalties at 11:16 and 11:44 to give the Gusties a 5-on-3 advantage. Gustavus scored its first goal of the game at the 12:45 mark when Carolyn Draayer found the back of the net off an assist from Laura Johnson.
That brought one of the Blazers' players out of the penalty box, but Gustavus took advantage of the 5-on-4 and scored again less than a minute later when Katie Aney scored off assists from Rachel Skoglud and Erica Power.
That would be the end of the scoring for the rest of the game, however, despite 14 shots attempts in the second period by the Gusties and 10 more in the third. Saint Benedict had four shots on goal in the first period, five in the second and eight more in the third.
Brigette Miller had three shots on goal to lead CSB. The Blazers finished with eight penalties for 16 minutes and the Gusties had seven for 14 minutes.
Traut finished the night with 16 saves, including 14 in the second period. Lindsey Hibbard made 17 saves for Gustavus to preserve the shutout.
Saint Benedict returns to action and tries to get back in the win column Thursday, Feb. 5 when it hosts Hamline at 7:15 p.m. at the MAC. The two teams play again Friday at 7 p.m. in St. Paul.
