MOORHEAD, Minn. – With the game on the line and the clock ticking closer and closer to zero, the right person had the ball for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team.
Mattie Lueck drove the lane and scored to put the Blazers up two, 63-61, against Concordia College with four seconds left on the clock. The Cobbers got the ball inbounds and called a timeout when they got past half court, but with 0.4 seconds remaining, they couldn't get a shot off and Saint Benedict held on for the come-from-behind win.
It was fitting that Lueck – who finished with 29 points – score the winning basket, as it was her three-point play that gave CSB (9-9, 6-5 MIAC) its first lead of the game, 58-56, with 3:45 left on the clock. The Cobbers led by six, 56-50, with just under six minutes left, but
Annie Dittberner hit a jumper and a three and Lueck converted her three-point play to put the Blazers up.
Alison Newton hit a free throw and Lueck scored to make it a four-point game, 61-57, with 1:43 left, but Concordia tied the game at 61 with 26 seconds left to set Lueck up for her late-game heroics.
The Cobbers (10-8, 6-5) got off to a fast start and led 8-0 with less than four minutes gone. They pushed their 5left in the first half, but Concordia answered with a run to push its lead back to nine, 20-11. The Cobbers maintained that lead, and made it a 10-point game on a basket by Greta Walsh to go up 31-21 at halftime.
Concordia pushed its lead into double digits early in the second half, and went up 15, 50-35, thanks to a three by Emma Peterson with 11:42 left to play. But the Blazers weren't done. Lueck hit a jumper to spark a 23-6 run that didn't ended with Lueck's three-point play to put CSB up two with 3:45 remaining.
Lueck finished with 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field. She went 2-for-2 from long range and 3-for-3 from the line. Lueck also had two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot. Dittberner added 10 points and
Elena Koch finished with six rebounds. CSB shot 54.3 percent from the field, including an incredible 68 percent in the second half. The Blazers went 9-for-15 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
Alley Fisher led Concordia with 17 points and Olivia Johnson finished with 12. Jenna Januschka had eight rebounds and Erin Janushcka chipped in with three assists. The Cobbers shot 37.7 percent from the field, went 8-for-10 from the line and had 32 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
The Blazers return home Saturday, Jan. 31, when they host St. Kate's at 3 p.m. CSB Athletic Director
Carol Howe-Veenstra, who is retiring in June, will be recognized at halftime of the game for her 30 years with the athletic department.
