ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team wrapped up its season series against St. Kate's with an overtime tie Saturday afternoon. Both teams scored third-period goals, and despite numerous chances, neither team scored in overtime so the game finished in a 1-1 tie at the MAC in St. Cloud.
Both teams had quality chances in the first two period to score, but neither was able to capitalize. The Wildcats outshot CSB 8-6 in the first period, but it was Saint Benedict that outshot SCU, 8-5, in the second. The Blazers broke the scoreless tie midway through the third period when
Brigette Miller took advantage of a CSB power play and notched her fifth goal of the season to put the Blazers up 1-0.
Hannah Esselman was credited with the assist – her second of the weekend and third of the season.
Saint Benedict held that lead until the final four minutes of the game. With 3:30 left to play, Jordan Solheim scored right in front of the net off a pass from Megan Killmer to tie the score at 1-1.
The two teams combined for 19 shots in the third period, but neither was able to score the game-winner, so it went to overtime. The Wildcats put three shots on net, but Blazer goalie
Jenna Traut stopped all three and the game ended in a tie.
The Wildcats (4-8-4, 2-5-3) had a 28-21 advantage in shots on goal, including 12 in the third period alone. Traut finished the night with 27 saves. Abbi White made 20 saves for St. Kate's.
Saint Benedict, which is now 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the MIAC, is on the road Friday, Jan. 30, when it travels to St. Peter, Minn., to take on nationally ranked Gustavus. The two teams play at the MAC at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31. The Blazers shocked Gustavus – and the conference – by sweeping the Gusties last season and look to repeat that next weekend.
