CSB hockey falls to Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. – Last season, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team shocked the MIAC when it upset Gustavus Adolphus 4-2 and handed the Gusties their first conference loss in several seasons.

The Blazers headed into Friday night's game looking to shock the No. 6 Gusties again, but Gustavus had other ideas.

After a scoreless first period, Gustavus (14-2-2, 10-0-1) scored once in the second period and twice in the third to pull away for a 3-0 win in St. Peter, Minn. The win helped the Gusties make their spot at the top of the conference standings a little more secure. Second-place St. Thomas is 7-1-3 in the league.

Neither team was able to score in the first period, and CSB goalie Jenna Traut made 10 saves to keep Gustavus off the board. The Gusties' first goal came at the 13:32 mark of the second period on a power play after a tripping call against Saint Benedict. Katie Aney scored off assists from Erica Power and Allison Eder-Zdechlik.

Traut made 10 more saves in the second and the Blazers put eight shots on net, led by two each from Liz Hermes and Elli Marvin. The Gusties added an insurance goal midway through the second period when Keri Pickel scored off assists from Eder-Zdechlik and Erica Power, and Gustavus added a second power play goal with just under five minutes left when Carolyn Draayer scored.

The Blazers (5-8-2, 4-5-2) finished the night with 18 shots on goal to Gustavus' 32. Hermes and Brigette Miller each had four shots on goal. Traut finished the night with 29 saves.

Gustavus and Saint Benedict are back in action at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the MAC in St. Cloud, Minn.
