Box ScoreST. PAUL, Minn. – For the first time in three seasons it didn't take double overtime to decide a winner when the College of Saint Benedict soccer team took on Hamline University Tuesday afternoon.
The Blazers, who won each of the past two meetings 3-2 in double overtime, didn't even need one overtime Tuesday in St. Paul, just a single goal late in regulation to pull away for a 1-0 victory over the Pipers.
The win is the sixth in a row for Saint Ben's, which is 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It also marked the fifth shutout of the year for the Blazers. The loss marked the first of the season for Hamline, which entered the contest as the only undefeated MIAC team remaining. The Pipers are now 4-1-1.
For much of the game it looked as though at least one overtime would be needed as the two teams were evenly matched throughout. It was a scoreless game at halftime, and stayed scoreless until nearly the 83
rd minute when
Megan Lenz broke the drought.
Lenz notched her first goal of the season off an assist from
Brooke DeMets at 82:53 to put Saint Benedict on the board in what proved to be the only goal Saint Ben's would need.
Heather Kaluzniak continued to be solid in the net for Saint Benedict. She stopped all four shots she faced to preserve both the win and the shutout. She has a .952 save percentage and has given up just one goal so far this season.
The Blazers outshot the Pipers 10-7, and held a narrow edge in shots on goal (7-4).
Saint Ben's in on the road again Saturday, Sept. 20, when it travels to Northfield, Minn., to take on St. Olaf College. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
