Northfield, Minn. -- The Saint Benedict soccer team (7-1, 2-0 MIAC) notched its biggest win of the season thus far, downing the Oles of St. Olaf's College (1-5, 1-1 MIAC) by a 3-0 margin. With the win the Blazers extend their win streak to seven games and move into a first-place tie atop the MIAC standings with Concordia-Moorhead (6-1, 2-0 MIAC).
Â
Defenses dominated the first-half, which featured two shots from the Oles and none from the Blazers. Senior keeper
Megan Favorite made two saves in the half to keep the game even at 0-0 heading into halftime.
Â
In the second-half, the Blazer offense ignited, breaking away to score three goals against the Ole defense. The first goal was scored by sophomore forward
Taylor Hedin in the game's 56th minute off an assist from junior forward
Aly Hoffman. The goal was Hedin's second of the year.
Â
In the 76th minute, Hoffman set up another scoring opportunity for the Blazers, giving a perfectly placed through ball to junior defender
Megan Lenz. Lenz promptly rifled the ball past Ole keeper Ruth Hesse to give the Blazers a 2-0 second-half lead. That goal was Lenz's second of the year.
Â
Eight minutes later Hoffman decided to get in on the goal-scoring action herself, scoring unassisted to seal the 3-0 victory. That goal and two assists raises Hoffman's point total to
12 for the season and moves her into third in the MIAC in points scored. Her goal total (four) also ranks third among MIAC players.
Â
Favorite and sophomore keeper
Heather Kaluzniak combined for another clean sheet, the fifth time this season they have combined to blank the opposition. Kaluzniak sits atop the MIAC leaderboard in save percentage (.962) and goals against average (0.22). Favorite trails close behind, ranking third in both categories (.889 sv%; 0.29 GAA).
Â
The Blazers return to action next Saturday (Sept. 27) when they will host Gustavus Adulphus College (0-4-2, 0-1-1 MIAC) in another MIAC matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Collegeville.
